Victoria Recreations

Throughout the greater Victoria BC area there are endless possibilities for outdoor activities and eco-tourism; from “soft adventure” to the more challenging extreme activities. And since southern Vancouver Island has a temperate climate many are possible year round.

Victoria recreations - marine

· Whale-watching - whale watching companies abound with a variety of types of boats. There are zodiacs for the more adventurous and larger covered boats for those looking for a warmer, dryer outing. It is possible to leave from the inner harbour in Victoria, from Sidney or Sooke. The excursions are usually for about 3 hours and include interpretation and viewing of many marine and wildlife species. So, along with the opportunity to view orca and other marine mammals you will also view our spectacular shorelines and our rich ecosystem.
Your hosts will be pleased to help you with information and reservations. whale watching, killer whales, orcas

· Sailing - if you wish to have a sailing adventure there are companies who will take you out for several hours or a whole day if you wish. It is a wonderfully relaxing way to see the lovely Vancouver Island coastline.

· Kayaking - whether a novice or experienced kayaker there are places throughout the region to rent a kayak. The Gorge waterway is a very good place to kayak and it is accessible from downtown. For ocean kayaking there are adventure centres in both Sooke and Sidney.

· Scuba Diving - southern Vancouver Island has some of the best northern diving in the world. There are a number of companies who will rent you equipment, give you lessons or take you for a dive.

· Fishing – along with great diving there is great fishing for wild Salmon and Halibut. There are guides throughout the area who will take you out for 4 hours or a whole day. All you need is a fishing license, which can be obtained very easily.

Victoria recreation - on Vancouver Island

· Hiking – there is a trail for everyone – from the easy Galloping Goose trail (a converted railway line) to the quite challenging Todd Gowland trail. One of the most spectacular marine trails is East Sooke Park and further up the coast is the Juan de Fuca trail which can be day tripped or can be a three or four day camping trip. There are too many trails to list here but you can research them at www.crd.bc.ca/parks

· Bird Watching – for those who wish to spend some peaceful moments watching the local birds there are a number of places to do that. Witty’s lagoon in the community of Metchosin and Whiffen Spit in Sooke to name a couple.

· Horseback Riding- for trail riding there are trail riding stables on the Saanich Peninsula. And lessons can be arranged.

· Cycling - this part of the world is very cycling friendly with cycle and mountain bike trails and cycling paths on some roads. Many people commute via bike. So either with your own bike or with a rental one go out and explore. A good resource is www.cyclingvictoria.com

· Swimming – Saanich Commonwealth Place has a full-sized pool, wave pool, a waterslide, sauna, steam room and gym.

· Zip Lining - for the more adventurous there is a zip line just 30 minutes from down town Victoria in the community of Sooke. Taking the Adrenaline is an exciting way to spend a few hours - strapped onto a cable and with the help of well-qualified guides you swing your way through old growth forest.
